Roger Wang & Friends : "Colours" Concert 2013 - Press Release

KOTA KINABALU, SABAH, October 21, 2013 – Sabah’s master fingerstyle guitarist Roger Wang will shake the walls of the recently-opened Sabah Art Gallery here with his brand of lively humour, songs and passionate entertainment this November 22 and 23.

Together with percussionist Peter Lau and bassist Simon Lau, Wang continues his tradition of organising the annual “Roger Wang & Friends” concert at the art gallery with new friends this year. The concert, themed “Colours”, will feature vocalist Gee Mojina, keyboardist Damian Paul and oboist Howard Ng.

Mojina is the latest artiste signed under Wang’s recording label, RAM Production.

Wang confessed that he is excited to introduce his new “toy” – the harp guitar – to the Kota Kinabalu audience during the shows.

The repertoire for the evenings will be “a rainbow of music that blends the accessibility of pop music with the intricacy of jazz,” Wang added.

Roger Wang & Friends: “Colours” Concert 2013 will be the first show hosted by the art gallery since its official opening recently. It is now located along Mile 2, Jalan Penampang here, next to the Luyang Perdana housing estate and the National Archive building.

The 90-minute long concert will start at 8pm that Friday and Saturday evening. Tickets are available for sale at RM80 per person at the Sabah Art Gallery (tel: 088-268 806), RAM Production Sdn Bhd, Damai Point, Kota Kinabalu (tel: 088-218 395 or 012-8323 201) and the two Party Play Lifestyle Cafes in Kota Kinabalu: Gaya Street and Lintas. Utmost Love Fingerstyle concert

Even though I've been playing solo fingerstyle guitar for over 15 years, this upcoming concert will be one of the few times that I will actually be performing solo. Besides my regular six string guitars... I will be featuring for the first time a brand new nylon string harp guitar built by Malaysian luthier, Edward Hiew.
Like I said .. I will be almost alone .... Joining me for a few songs is an old friend and a great musician, Mr Farid Ali. After being absent from performing for the last few years, Farid is making a come back in an inspiring way. We will be performing some guitar / gambus duets.
Special thanks to the organizers, Vincent Chin and Serena Chong of Heartstealer, for putting this concert together.

September 1,  Sunday            Damai Sunset Music Concert, Labuan

This 2nd annual musical concert is held at Peace Park, on the beautiful beach of Labuan. I will be performing a short set with my Labuan friends, percussionist Peter Lau and bassist Simon Lau featuring Sidi who plays the Gambus.

September 6,  Friday              Bonding With Gaya Street, Kota Kinabalu

From Sunday farmers’ market to old shoplots, from the latest eateries to international financial institutions, Gaya Street is the most famous street here in my hometown of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. The street is rich in history because it was one of the first streets the British built when they established the city in the 1890s.

Last year, the North Borneo History Enthusiasts celebrated the first “Bonding With Gaya Street” community exhibition. Co-organised by the Kota Kinabalu City Hall, the exhibition included concerts and photo exhibitions.

So successful was that event, the organizers are planning the second and bigger exhibition this year.

And I’m extremely proud to be a part of it this year. My friend, percussionist Peter Lau and I will be giving a workshop at 2:30pm. Later that day, the Roger Wang Trio will be performing at 8pm on the street, next to Party Play. We will be featuring vocalist Gee Mojina and pianist Damian Paul.

Both workshop and performance are open to all.

September 7 & 8, Saturday & Sunday            10th JB Arts Festival

JSPAIn its tenth year now, the Johor Bahru Arts Festival just gets bigger and better every single year!

I’m especially thrilled to return to the JB Arts Fest stage with an old and dear friend, the Guitar/Gambustar Guru himself - the legendary Farid Ali.

And we’ll introduce new friends, vocalist Gee Mojina and pianist Damian Paul to Johor.

The festival has named us the 3G: Guitar, Gambus & Gee. We’ll be performing at Eight Lido at 8:00pm, September 7 and at the main stage on Bukit Timbalan at 8:00pm, September 8.

Please call the JB Arts Festival for tickets: 019-716 9900 / 019-713 9900.

Fairy Tales by Roger Wang

This is the most important song I have ever written.

It's also my first vocals outing and first music video that I created myself.

The song was inspired by my daughter's obsession with fairy tales and being a princess. It sums up a lot of my feelings about being a father as well as the hopes and lessons I have for her.

It's often hard for a father to relate to dolls and the way young girls play. Playing Lego together was one of the few activities that we shared. All those hours helped bond us. This video was made with those Lego sets and mini-figures. They became the best way for me to express this song visually.

This song and video come from a very personal place, but it goes out to all fathers and daughters out there, regardless of age.

2V1G (two voices, one guitar) started out in 2007 as an experimental project.

While I was confident it would do well in the audiophile circle, I must admit that I didn't see it crossing over to mainstream and becoming one of the most spectacular successes in independent Chinese audiophile music.

Though the album has turned into an international best-selling classic, as a group 2V1G has not performed beyond the Malaysian shores. Which is why I am delighted to announce 2V1G's debut performance in Singapore at the prestigious Esplanade.

The new third generation 2V1G features myself and Malaysia's top Chinese Jazz songbird, Winnie Ho, from the original line up, together with fresh new vocalist Serena Chong who recently joined us.

For this concert, 2V1G will be bring a mixture of Chinese and English classics from the 70, 80s to 90s and even a segment dedicated to Singapore’s famous singer-songwriters such as Liang Wen Fu and Kit Chan presented in its signature pure, simple and heartfelt style.

Pachelbel's Canon in D by Roger Wang

A lovely couple requested that I perform Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D for their wedding ceremony.
It was a solo guitar gig, so I had to figure out a way to play this alone. I felt that attempting to interpret the piece as a solo fingerstyle guitar arrangement would take away the too much of the beauty and smoothness of the music.

Upon studying the music score, I realised that the song evolves around a 2-bar sequence that I could pull of with a looper. The Boomerang 3 Phrase Sampler was perfect for it.

The first loop holds the 2-bar chord progression that repeats throughout the piece. The second loop is set to loop and overdub with a short decay. This enables me to just play the part of the first violin while the loops automatically repeats what I just played every 2-bars (second violin) and every 4-bars (third violin).
This made it possible to recreate the whole 4-piece harmony on 1 guitar.

It makes more sense with the video. Enjoy!

On March 25, 2011, a local daily printed an article “Lady Gaga deemed to have gone overboard”. It reported reactions from various Sabahans regarding the American songstress' call to young Malaysians to protest the ban of one of her songs in the country.

I was one of those interviewed for that article.

It is, however, very unfortunate that I was misquoted in that article.

The day before the article came out, I received a call from the reporter, asking me to comment on Lady Gaga's statement. At that point, I had not read Lady Gaga's statement. Based on her explanation, I was made to understand that Lady Gaga was rallying Malaysian youths to march into the streets to protest against the ban.

My response to that was, "I don't think we need to worry too much about it. I don't think the majority of the Malaysian youth will respond like that. It's not about whether they agree or don't agree with the issue. I just don't think parents need to lock up their kids or that the FRU and Police need to be on stand by. I believe it will be just taken as celebrity news."

I DID NOT make the statement printed - "We in Malaysia uphold religious and moral values, and observe our own set of culture. We oppose gay behaviour and Lesbianism as these are negative elements".

I had a bad feeling after the phone call. When I read the article the next day, I felt manipulated. The article doesn't reflect my views on the issue and I truly regret being a part of it.

"Milestones" Album Launching and Showcase

[Press Release】

Roger Wang, the Sabahan finger-style guitarist, celebrated his 10th year in the music industry in 2010. Already a famous musician in his own right, his recent achievements helped to catapult him to greater heights. Thanks to Jacky Cheung, the Cantopop "Heavenly King" who took his composition "Love Scale" and used it in his Canto-Jazz album "Private Corner". The song gave Roger Wang tremendous international exposures and helped him to win the recent PWH "Best Original Composition - International Category" award, a Bi-annual music award ceremony organized by the Malaysian Chinese press members.

His other achievement is his collaboration with local Audiophile producer, Leslie Loh, in the highly-acclaimed Chinese acoustic album 2V1G (2 Voices, 1 Guitar), which has sold over 20,000 copies since its launch in 2008. 2V1G's debut album was recently listed in Hong Kong's Audiophile "CD Bible 2010" as one of the top 500 best recordings of all time. With such accolades, it is high time for Roger Wang to release his first compilation in 10 years, aptly named "Milestones". 'Milestones’ is a double disc compilation album that celebrates Roger Wang’s first ten years as a recording artiste.

This collection highlights his musical journey with hand picked tracks from 6 albums released over the decade, which includes tracks from Double Take’s “1 Voice, 6 Strings, 12 Moods” and “1 Voice, 6 Strings, 12 Days of Christmas”, Wang’s solo album “Journey Home”, his collaboration with Farid Ali on “No Strings Attached”, 2V1G’s debut album, “Love’s Tapestry” with Gina Panizales as well as 3 unreleased bonus tracks. This album has been specially remastered to audiophile standard by Keith Yip of Rock In Music, Hong Kong.

To celebrate this joyous occasion, Roger Wang is going to have a album-launching-cum-mini showcase, to be held in Loud+Clear record shop on 25th Feb 2011 (Friday), from 8:00pm to 9:00pm. Admission is free! Please book a seat with Caffee Wong at 012-3698160!

Details: Date: 25th Feb 2011 (Friday) Venue: Loud+Clear Record Shop, Solaris Dutamas Time: 8-9pm

"Love Scale" Wins Twice At Music Award

Roger_Wang_and_PWH_Trophy_resized.jpg Roger Wang, saw his original composition, “Love Scale”, bag two coveted awards at Malaysia’s 11th Entertainment Journalists Association Music Award presentation held at the Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting on November 27, 2010.

The biennial award show presented Wang's song, made internationally popular by Hong Kong superstar Jacky Cheung early 2010, with the coveted “Top 10 Original Songs (International)” and the “Best Overseas interpretation Artist” for Cheung.More than 20 internationally-released Chinese songs were nominated for the “Top 10 Original Songs (International)”category and “Love Scale” was one of the top ten selected to win the award.

Other winners in the category include Fish Leong and Gary Cao. A total of 24 awards will be given out during the finale.

The song was originally released by the Sabahan musical duo Double Take, made up of Wang and Malaysian jazz princess Mia Palencia, in the year 2000 for their debut album and was selected by Cheung for his latest album “Private Corner” which was released in January 2010.

Wang said, “Winning the award is an incredible honour for me. Being new to the Chinese music scene and being nominated with so many other great composers, I really didn't expect to win. I wrote this song ten years ago as an English jazz ballad. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would make its way to one of the biggest Cantopop star in the world and receive this recognition.”

This prestigious awards ceremony is organised by the Entertainment Journalists Association, also known as Persatuan Wartawan Hiburan Wilayah Persekutuan or PWH, a group made up of respected entertainment journalists from the various Chinese dailies throughout Malaysia, including the Sin Chew Daily and the China Press.

Among the star-studded guests at the ceremony that night were prominent local and international artistes Michael Wong, Victor Wong, Fish Leong, Penny Tai, Gary Cao, Rynn Lim, Nicholas Teo, Yu Heng, Z-Chen, Danny Wan, Daniel Lee, Yi Jet Qi, Lee Chi Ching, Karen Kong, Nick Chung, Henly, Yang Wei Han, Huang Yi Fei, Anthony Zheng, Candy Cheah, Yise Lo, WHY, Twins Girl, Wu Jia Hui, Manhand, Crossfire, and many more.

I launched my first album in November 2000. It was a humble independent effort with no backing from a record label, distributor or management. But it started an important journey for me.

10 years and 6 albums later, I must say I have been truly blessed. The music business can be very unforgiving, I am so thankful to be still be in the game.

To mark this point in my career, I will be releasing a special 10th anniversary compilation album called "Milestones".

This album is a collection of 23 personal favourites from the 6 albums I have released between 2000-2009. I have also included 3 unreleased bonus tracks. Two of it are live recordings from my concert with re:mix and one a Chill House Music collaboration with DJ John Boy Lee. Check out the full track listing below. All songs have been remastered by Keith Yip (Rock In Music, Hong Kong) making it sound even better than before.

This is my first decade as a recording artiste summed up in 2 CDs with a booklet to tell the stories behind each album and each song.

"Milestones" is expected to hit the retail market just before Christmas, but we are open for online pre orders right now. The first 299 online orders will receive a signed copy of "Milestones" and a limited "Milestones" guitar pick.

This is a very meaningful release for me and I hope you will continue your support by adding this album to your collection.

2V1G's New Album

For awhile it looked liked 2V1G was going to remain a one-album wonder. Finding a replacement for Regine Tai was harder then we thought, but after 2 years, I am glad to say that 2V1G is back and the new album is ready for release soon.

The new "V", Jeffery Lim Chin Feu, has done a great job not only in blending into 2V1G, but also bringing with him a new dimension to the group. Personally, I felt a lot more comfortable recording this album. I enjoyed the songs more. Recording wise, the sound is fuller. Plus now that I have a deeper understanding of Chinese pop music .... I feel I could contribute more to the arrangement and play it with the right kind feel.

The album will be out on 25 August 2010.
